Today we hear the story of the Annunciation, when the angel, Gabriel, appears to Mary and tells her that she will give birth to the Son of God. So often we focus on Mary’s generous yes, that we forget the rest of the story. Luke paints a picture of Mary as a young, unmarried woman who is afraid, “troubled”, and even questions Gabriel. Despite all that is going on inside of her, though, Mary can confidently say, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Mary does not let fear paralyze her nor does she let the uncertainty of the future thwart her. She allows life to unfold according to God’s will, not her own.
How often do we see our will as God’s will or let fear prevent us from action? Listen for God’s voice today and say yes to something a bit beyond your comfort zone.
