The Marist Brothers were founded in 1817 by Saint Marcellin Champagnat, a young French priest.  While in the seminary, St. Marcellin joined a small group of seminarians who pledged themselves to form a society of priests, brothers, sisters and lay people dedicated to Mary.  Six months after his ordination Marcellin encountered a dying teenager who knew little of his Catholic faith.  That encounter, combined with St. Marcellin’s early educational experiences and the poor state of post-revolutionary French schools, led St. Marcellin to establish a group of Brothers dedicated to the Christian education of young people.
